These animals were named for their short tails. They occur frequently in the southern half of North America. They are common in the mountains of the Carolinas, and also in the coastal plain as far north as the Great Dismal Swamp. Larger populations occur in the mountains and coastal plain than in the Piedmont region.

These animals are widely distributed throughout the United States and southern Canada in a variety of habitats, from dense forests, to mountains, prairies, farmlands, and even deserts. They are rarely seen in the wild because the species normally travels by walking. Their keen eyesight and hearing are always on the alert for possible danger.
