There are two types of the breed that can be distinguished by the length of their coat and accordingly can be found in different parts of the mountain. Thus the type with the long coat is bred in the south of the mountain whereas the other type can be found in the north part of the mountain.

Also called Epagneul Bleu de Picardie.
Being isolated in the Estrela Mountains the Cão da Serra da Estrela have been bred as a pure breed and is actually considered to be one of the oldest breeds of the Iberian Peninsula though there have been many breeds originated from this region.
