This breed of dogs belong to the group of Sheepdogs and Cattledogs. This breed is thought to be the result of crossbreeding of the now extinct Smithfield (closely related to the Old English Sheepdog), the Dingo, the Collie, and the Bull Terrier.

There also could have been other breeds participating in that crossbreeding, and could be: Dalmatian and Kelpie blood, which would have been introduced in 1840.
