The population of these animals is very little in this state – 200-400 individuals, so the government protects all of them and all kinds of hunting and body parts trading are prohibited. The population has declined because of habitat loss; forests have been cut and converted to agricultural areas.

In 1992, the species was listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Today, efforts are being made to provide suitable habitat for these creatures in their historical range. These efforts include preventing further habitat fragmentation, establishing corridors between existing fragmented habitats, and restoring forests.
