The dog has a soft double coat. The undercoat is soft and dense, the outer coat is coarse and curly. The combination of the two gives a soft but substantial feel to the touch which is similar to plush or velvet and when patted springs back.

Also called Tenerife Dog.
When bathed and brushed, the coat stands off the body, creating an overall powder puff appearance. The texture of the coat is of utmost importance; thus, a wiry coat is not desirable. The limp, silky coat, a coat that lies down, or a lack of undercoat are all very serious faults. Rescues may offer a bichon frise mix with photos and profiles of the dogs.
