Earlier the breed was popular and it was known under a different name that was later changed to the current one. Actually the breed was originated on the Canary Islands and it was brought form there to Europe by the Spanish sailors. It became very popular with the nobility as a lap dog.

The breed is known form the 1300’s and was used as a lap dog, favored by the royalty. The breed does well in an apartment and does not require a lot of exercises doing well with brief playing with its master.
