The breed was on the verge of extinction but thanks to Professor Albert Heim who saved the breed and began professional breeding. In 1948 there was a significant out crossing to a Newfoundland dog, with a resulting improvement in temperament and increase in size. Healthy puppies can be found in reputable kennels by conscientious dog breeders.
