These animals were killed in great numbers as a part of sport and for medical purposes in the 19th and 20th centuries and their numbers have declined at a fast rate. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were about 40,000 of these animals; today only 3000 of them remain. About 100 years ago, there were 8 subspecies: the Amur (Siberian,) South China, Indo-Chinese, Sumatran, the one described, Bali, Caspian and Javan, and their overall population amounted to 100,000 individuals. Nowadays, there are less than 6,000 species left in the world, and if the current tendency persists, they will be gone by the middle of the 21st century.

Bengal Tiger Endangered -
kittens, catteries
Three other subspecies of tigers have already become extinct. The main danger for these animals is habitat destruction through agricultural expansion, new roads and human settlements. These predators have nowhere to go; separate populations are isolated and it is difficult for them to find mates. Therefore, they have no alternative but to inbreed, which in turn results in serious genetic disorders. Deforestation has forced much of their prey, such as deer, antelopes, buffalo, etc., to leave the place, and this has contributed to an increased amount of attacks against livestock and humans.
