This species is endangered; only about 3000 of these animals are left in the world today and about 500 of them are kept in captivity. Their population continuously declines due to illegal hunting and habitat destruction. These animals require large home ranges to hunt. They do not have a great stamina and cannot run for long distances. Therefore, only one out of ten charges they make is successful. However, they are very patient in stalking their prey and are capable of approaching almost noiselessly. Usually, they hurl themselves at the prey and jump onto its back and pin it to the ground. They kill the quarry by biting hard on its neck to suffocate it.

White variety of the breed is very rare and very popular. Such animals are raised in zoos, but in the wild they are born once in every 10,000 births. They are not albinos and are also called chinchilla species. They have blue eyes and brown strips that indicate the presence of melanin in their body. When two white animals are bred, their offspring is prone to various breeding depressions, such as shorter life span, crossed eyes, curvature of the spine.
