These animals are solitary and they usually hunt alone; when the time of mating comes the male and female meet. Usually the female has to look for the male, as the territories of hunting are extensive. These cats breed during the winter season. Males maintain home ranges covering up to 200 square miles; females’ home ranges are much smaller, and one male’s range usually overlaps several females’ domains. The dominant male mates with as many females that live within his home range as possible.

Females usually give birth to 1-4 cubs. The cases when 6 cubs are born are rather rare. The young are born blind and open their eyes in 15-16 days. When they are 8 weeks old, they join their mother on the hunt, and at 6 months they are able to kill. At the age of 16 months, the young are able to feed themselves, and they become independent at this time. Females mature by age of 3 years, and males usually reach puberty by 4 years. These animals prey on various medium-sized and large animals, such as buffalo, deer, antelopes, wild pigs, monkeys, gaur, small elephants and even crocodiles. They also hunt smaller games, such as birds, frogs, lizards, snakes, crabs, and fish. They can stay without food for several days.
