The decline of the Tigers of Bali and Java is attributed to extensive habitat fragmentation and insularization of small populations and widespread loss of prey. Inbreeding weakens the Tiger’s gene pool and increases the risk of genetic abnormalities. Dissection of their natural habitat results in separation and impedes mating. As man advances deeper into their habitat, the risk of accidental encounters increases, and in this case it is hard to foresee the animal’s behavior. Over the last several years, the number of fatal encounters has grown substantially.

Often Tigers are shot or poisoned by the native people for livestock predation and killing of people. Poaching is another reason for disappearance of many Tigers. Their bones, whiskers and skins are used in traditional Chinese medicine and are highly valued on the black market.
