These are not very productive animals and usually two to four cubs are born though usually only two survive. The gestation period lasts for about 103 days and the newborn cubs weigh about 800-1,500 gm each being 31-40 cm from head to tail. The cubs are born blind and helpless, and it is not until they reach 2 months of age that they start learning the world and the arts of hunting. Cubs require reliable protection, and the female is usually suspicious of anything or anyone approaching the lair.

Bengal Tiger Photo -

During the first eight weeks, the cubs drink their mother's milk though the tigress continues to feed them on meat for five to six months. The mother usually brings up the cubs single-handedly. Males do not care of the young at all. This is the worry of the female, because males may kill cubs. The cubs are related to the mother for about two years from birth and become fully mature by age of 3 (females) to 4 (males) years old.
