These animals have a unique pattern of black stripes on an orange-brown coat and skin. White, red, albino, black and stripeless individuals are very rare. This species is the second largest of the cat family; mature males reach up to 3 meters at length (with tail) and up to 230 kg at weight. Although these felines are more numerous than the other four subspecies, they are endangered too. There were around 40,000 species at the beginning of the 20th century, and now there are less than 5,000, and many of them continue to fall victims of illegal trade and poaching.
