Adult males of this species reach up to 3 meters from head to tail and weigh up to 230 kg; females are a little smaller, reaching up to 2.5 meters in length and weighing about 140 kg. These animals are easily recognized by their striped coats. Males are very territorial and maintain large home ranges. They do not allow competing males to come within their ranges but prefer not to fight. A rival male usually leaves after receiving a warning sign from the dominant animal. Females’ home ranges are much smaller, a male’s range usually covers several those of females.

The most common color variant of these animals is black or brown stripes on the orange background. There are also white, red, albino, black and stripeless individuals. These animals are formidable hunters with sharp teeth, strong jaws and retractable claws. Although they are regarded with awe, they rarely perpetrate attacks against people and usually avoid contacts with them. However, nursing mothers are very dangerous and attack everything and everyone approaching their young. An old or ill animal that cannot hunt in the usual fashion may pick on a human.
