Being pure carnivores, these creatures need plenty of meat and have to hunt often. Their main food is big game, such as buffalo, deer, pig, antelope, young elephant and other animals. The home ranges of these carnivores depend on the food availability and may reach up to 150 square miles. Females maintain smaller home ranges than males, because they tend to stick around their lairs. Males do not take any part in weaning the young and may pose danger to cubs; therefore, females chase them away aggressively should they get close to litters. A male’s home range overlaps several of those maintained by females.
