Tigers of this subspecies are endangered in the majority of their habitat. The population density is very low and the tigers are scattered through India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, China and other Asiatic countries. Not all these countries take protective measures for these animals. Even in those regions where trade in tiger body parts is outlawed, at least one animal is killed illegally. Wildlife departments suffer a lack of qualified specialists and are too underfunded to be effective in battling poachers. In order to preserve the shape of the animal, specialists put wild animals in zoos and sanctuaries, where they grow under human supervision and protection.

There were 8 species until the first half of the 20th century; now there are only five of them left.
