Tigers of this subspecies are endangered in the majority of their habitat. The population density is very low and the tigers are scattered through India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, China and other Asiatic countries. Wildlife departments suffer a lack of qualified specialists and are too underfunded to be effective in battling poachers. There were 8 species until the first half of the 20th century; now there are only five of them left.
