This species evolved in eastern Asia between 1.3 and 2 million years ago. Like all other carnivores, these animals descended from miacids that lived about 60 million years ago. These ancient carnivores were rather small, with long sharp teeth, long body and short legs. Today, these animals are very large; they have powerful legs, sharp teeth and claws and a muscular body. They kill prey by pinning it to the ground and using their claws and teeth on it. In the beginning of the 20th century, there were 8 subspecies on the planet.

Contrary to common beliefs saber-toothed tigers were not the ancestors of modern species, because they belong to another branch of the cat family, which has become a dead-end. Saber-toothed tigers became extinct many millions of years ago probably due to lack of food. Nowadays, these animals are highly endangered and may become extinct by the middle of the 21st century. There are only five subspecies left in the world: the Amur (Siberian,) South China, Indo-Chinese, Sumatran and the one described.
