The Bengal tigers have short, reddish orange fur with narrow black, grey, or brown stripes. The underside is creamy or white. There are some individuals with white coat with dark stripes and icy blue eyes. These animals are met rather rare in the wild. It takes about 10,000 births for a white cub to occur. They are not albinos, because they still have dark stripes and blue irises. About 500 white species have been bred in zoos since the 1950s, and they attract millions of visitors.

There are actually five subspecies that are alive nowadays. Three subspecies are totally extinct for today and they are: Bali, Caspian and Javan. The process of disappearing of these creatures influenced the following factors: man and progress, poaching, hunting for coat and for medicine purposes and many others. This situation prompted the Indian government to establish a network of sanctuaries and reserves in 1973, and this proved helpful in slowing down the depopulation of these unique animals. However, the poaching still continues, and many wild animals are still being killed for their body parts and pelts. Breeding captive animals is another effective method of saving the species.
