There are four types of the breed that differ in coat length. These dogs were used in Belgium for herding and later bred as companions and watchdogs, once the need for herding dogs diminished. In 1959, the AKC recognized them as a separate breed.

These dogs make good companions since they are very intelligent and develop strong bonds to the owner. They can be characterized as observers, yet they are never aggressive. They live for 10-12 years on the average and can be used in sledding, obedience, agility, and other activities.
