The exact origin of the breed is uncertain. The breed might have originated in ancient Greece and France. Bred as hunting dogs, these scenting hounds were used to track rabbit and hare. Nowadays, they are used both as gundogs and family companions. As with all other dog breeds, the temperament of these dogs is predetermined by their major purpose. Scent hounds, they are very energetic, independent, agile, and determined dogs. There are two size varieties of the dogs: 13 inches and 15 inches. There is no difference in temperament in the two types.

These dogs are smart and versatile. They strive to please their owners, however, they can be stubborn at times, because they need variable exercises and easily get bored with drill. Some puppies are difficult to housebreak and need constant and firm training. Dogs adopted from rescues or shelters may have some behavioral problems, and require attention and patience on their new owners’ part.
