The breed was officially recognized in 1873 and the first breed club was formed in 1888. According to the American Kennel Club, the breed is in the hound group. These dogs perform a lot of functions and can also be used in a medical research. Nowadays, there are two types of this breed: the Southern Hound and the much quicker North Country variety. The working abilities and temperament of these varieties are the same and they both make good pets and hunting companions.
