The Beagle

These are sturdy small hounds whose precise origin is rather vague. Similar dogs existed in Greece about 400 B.C. and 200 B.C. in England. They were brought by Romans as small rabbit hounds. Later on, they were cross-bred with English local hounds. Two types of this breed existed by the 1700s: the Southern Hound and the North Country Hound. They both were aimed at hunting rabbits, hares and quail, but the North Country variety is much quicker. Very active and playful, the dogs of this breed enjoy playing especially with children. They are capable of jumping and playing for hours.

In order to get a well-behaved pet, one should understand the breed properly and be a good trainer. They have a keen sense of smell, which can lead them into trouble if they are not supervised. Being naturally intelligent and inquisitive, these hounds like to investigate everything new and can be easily attracted by an interesting scent. Many hounds cannot find the way home and become stray due to their curiosity. To prevent it, give the puppy obedience lessons since the early age. View the beagle photos when buying puppies.
