The dogs were introduced to England in Roman times around 200 B.C. and crossbred with local hounds. The breed was specially developed to kill rabbit and hare. The breed was probably called so after a French term meaning “gape throat.” One of the breed’s ancestors is Foxhound.

The dog’s elegant appearance with a somewhat sympathetic expression of the face has won the hearts in many countries of the world. These dogs tend to make good watchdogs, but their friendly nature makes them poor guard dogs. One of their most famous characteristics is their sweet hunting voice.
