The breed resembles the miniature foxhound and stands about 13-15 inches at the shoulder. The weight ranges from 18 to 30 pounds. Kennel clubs recognize different varieties of the breed. Basically, these are hardy, squarely built small hounds, with a sleek coat, large pendant ears and large round eyes. These are agile and merry dogs that are used as hunting companions, narcotics detection dogs, and do well in conformation. Besides being excellent working dogs, these creatures are very popular companions due to their friendly and affectionate nature.

Also called English Beagle.
The breed name may be linked to a Celtic word that means "small" or Old French word for "open throat" in relation to the breed's melodic bark. This breed is one of the smallest hunting dogs. These hounds don’t run fast following their prey, but have an excellent sense of smell and track the game for a long time. It’s easy for a hunter to follow the dog on foot. The first mention of the breed in the United States is dated as far back as 1642, yet the dogs of that time had little resemblance to true English bloodlines.
