This is a sturdy dog that is robust and squarely built. Developed for hunting, the breed tends to make wonderful family companion and friend as well. The dog’s coat is sleek and hard. The breed is similar to the small English Foxhound in appearance. The dogs are very sociable, courageous and smart. Calm and affectionate, they are excellent with children. If properly socialized, they do well with other dogs. The dogs of this breed require firm and fair training. Left unattended long, these canines tend to get destructive, as they seek for an outlet for their energy.

Dogs of similar appearance were known in ancient Greece. They were introduced to England about 200 B.C and crossbred with local hunting dogs. According to the current breed standard, these dogs measure 14-16 inches for males, and 13-15 inches for females. Dogs weigh 22-25 pounds, and bitches weigh 20-23 pounds. The coat in this breed may come in a great variety of colors, but tri-color, red and white, lemon and white, or orange and white colors are usually seen. The dog’s muzzle is straight and square.
