Smart and cute dogs, they are popular in many countries. This is the smallest breed of hound with the appearance similar to a miniature foxhound. The exact origin of the breed is vague. It is highly probable that packs of these dogs could have existed across Britain even before Roman times. These hounds were favored by women who could participate in hunting by following them on foot. It was impossible with other fast-running breeds. Two types of this breed existed by the 1700s: the Southern Hound and the North Country Hound. They both were aimed at hunting rabbits, hares and quail. They vary in size, but their functions and temperament are very similar.

The dog’s coat is short and easy to groom. Regular brushing and an occasional bath are likely to help control the shedding process in your dog. The dogs of this breed should not be left unsupervised when on a walk, since their hunting instinct is very strong. Neither should these dogs be trusted with smaller pets and babies. Being bred for hunting in packs, these hounds thrive for companionship; they should not be left alone for long.
