This is the first ever to be recognized and shown native Australian breed. Breeding started on the island of Tasmania and spread on to other states of the country. The breed was perfectly suited for the continent’s conditions and made a good vermin killer, sheepherder, and a companion.

They were bred from a few terriers brought along by the British. During breeding, high activity level, ability to adept to various conditions and need of the owner, intelligence, strife to work, and a friendly disposition were put stress on.
