Mature males defend large territories. Due to the size of the territory (normally 23 square kilometers), the dominant male regards other males as subordinates, but cannot exclude them. However, intruders are kept far from the resident females. The males bray in the presence of females.

Dogs are known to fear the animals. The creatures are sometimes used to protect ranch animals from stray dogs. A Jennet or a Gelding can be used as guards.
