Hobby, Thoroughbred and other English and Irish horse breeds were brought to the New World by the first English colonists in the 17-18th centuries. They had a great demand for strong, enduring and obedient horses to perform various tasks. As settlers moved westward, their horses crossbred with local species: feral Mustangs and horses developed by Native Americans. They were the descendants of the Arab, Barb and Turk mounts brought to America by Spanish conquistadors several centuries earlier. Such crosses resulted in compact and muscular equines. They were used almost for any task from pulling logs and working cattle to racing and pleasure riding.

American Quarter Horses are very tamable and sociable, and they can be trained to perform different household functions. They are very maneuverable and intelligent, and can be very helpful in driving cattle. These horses are very strong, obedient and enduring. Training should be patient, systematic and fair. Any attempt to bolt or disobey must be penalized immediately, because this behavior is more difficult to correct as the horse grows older. Punishment should neither be overly tough nor excessively mild.
