The history of the breed began in the 17th century, when first species were shipped to America by English colonists. The breed was influenced by Arab, Turk and Barb breeds, as well as some English and Irish breeds, and later the Thoroughbred, which arrived with the Spanish Conquistadors. In 1940, the AQHA was formed, and its specialists outlined the breed standard. It is the largest breed registry in the world, with over 3.2 million animals registered worldwide. Breeders work continuously toward the improvement of the breed in keeping with the concept that an offspring must be better than the parents.
