The name of the breed itself came from the two Welsh words the first part of which (cor-) means dwarf and the second one (-gi) means dog. That's why the name of the breed is translated from Welsh as little dog.

There are several theories concerning the history and the origin of the breed. Some seventy years ago the Cardigan breed and the other one The Welsh Corgi were thought to be two separate breeds.
