As there were many attempts to improve the breed there were many crossbreeding of the dog with other breeds. Thus the dog was crossbred with the Mastiff long ago. The aims of the crossbreeding were different – to create a better fighter, to improve the breed for the show and so on.

This crossbreeding results in the two following types of the dog – the Johnson type and the Scott type. The Johnson type is also called the standard type and the dogs of this type serve as working dogs and police dogs while the Scott dog is more a pet dog.
