The dogs have round eyes, which are set far apart and very dark. The ears should be small and thin and folded back in the form of a rose. The tail is short and carried low and the feet are short and strong. The coat of the dog is rather short and comes in the following colors: red, fawn, brindle, pale yellow or washed-out red, or white, or in a combination of these colors. On the whole it is rather easy to groom the dog.

This breed is a wonderful example of how selective work can change the whole appearance of a canine. People put emphasis on tenacity and strength and selected only massive dogs with a large head and strong jaws. In the result of such selection, the muzzle of purebred dogs has become very short, which causes breathing problems, especially in hot weather. Large body mass easily leads to obesity and makes these dogs coach potatoes. Fast growing puppies are prone to joint and bone problems, so they should be exercised very carefully.
