Before the 18th century, these birds were common throughout North America. Early settlers began to hunt them and compete for food. These predators were considered to be pests and the government encouraged their killing. Only by the 1930’s, people became aware of the population decline of these birds. Since 1940, killing this species has been illegal, but at the same time these birds began to suffer from DDT, lead and other agents widely used in agriculture. Today, the population of these birds has fully recovered. American bald eagles are featured in many photo collections and galleries of pictures online.
