Closer relatives of these animals are domesticated llama, and the wild guanaco and vicuna. The family camelidae originated in North America and migrated to South America, where they were domesticated and improved through selective breeding of many generations of natives.

Today the population of these animals is about 3 million head, the majority of them living in South America (Peru, Bolivia, and Chile). They are rather small, standing 32-40 inches high and weighing up to 190 pounds. There exist two types of these animals: Suri and Huacaya. 4h alpaca is an opportunity for kids to get involved with alternative farm products, or to raise for hunting.
